Polypropylene at a Glance

Polypropylene (PP) is a low-density (0.895–0.910 g/cm³) semi-crystalline thermoplastic produced by stereospecific polymerization of propylene monomer. Syntex America supplies PP in five injection-grade SKUs across two commercial families — four impact copolymers (P640J, P740J, P840J, and P945J) under the SCGC™ brand, plus the homopolymer Y40 from Oriental Energy (Donghua Energy), China. Every grade is delivered with a current technical datasheet, NCM tariff classification, and freight documentation suited to North, Central, and South American buyers.

Polypropylene is the second-largest commodity thermoplastic by global volume after polyethylene, serving the packaging, automotive, appliance, hygiene, and durables sectors. The resin's value comes from a rare combination of attributes: the lowest density of any commodity plastic (parts roughly 5–10% lighter than equivalent HDPE volume), a broad service-temperature window, chemical resistance, and recyclability under Resin Identification Code 5 (ASTM D7611).

  • PP Impact Copolymer (PPCOPO / HECO)

a homopolymer matrix with a dispersed ethylene–propylene rubber phase. The four SCGC™ P-series grades cover melt-flow indices from 10 to 65 g/10 min at 230 °C / 2.16 kg, trading low-temperature toughness against flow as MFI rises.

  • PP Homopolymer (PPHOMO)

a propylene-only chain with the highest stiffness, surface hardness, and crystallinity in the family. Y40 is supplied at MFI 40 g/10 min for high-flow injection of rigid thin-wall and complex parts where stiffness, not cold-impact ductility, drives the specification.

Grade Catalog

PP Impact Copolymer (PPCOPO / HECO)

The SCGC™ P-series impact copolymers are heterophasic polypropylenes manufactured by SCG Chemicals (SCGC™). Each grade pairs a homopolymer matrix with a dispersed ethylene–propylene rubber (EPR) phase to deliver low-temperature ductility while retaining injection-grade stiffness. The four-grade ladder — P640J, P740J, P840J, P945J — spans MFI 10 to 65 g/10 min and is the workhorse PP family for automotive, appliance, and industrial injection moulding. NCM tariff classification is 3902.10.20 (P640J, P840J) or 3902.30.00 (P740J, P945J).

How to choose between PP Homopolymer (PPHOMO Y40) and SCGC™ PP Impact Copolymer (P640J, P740J, P840J, P945J)

A four-step decision framework for selecting the right polypropylene grade among Syntex America's five injection-grade SKUs.

  1. Step 1

    Identify the lowest service temperature

If the part will see temperatures below 0 °C, eliminate Y40 (PPHOMO) and select an SCGC™ P-series PPCOPO grade. Homopolymer is brittle below 0 °C; the P-series impact copolymers retain ductility down to roughly –20 °C through their dispersed ethylene–propylene rubber phase.

  2. Step 2

Match the application class — stiffness vs cold-impact

Specify Y40 (PPHOMO) for rigid thin-wall injection where stiffness, surface hardness, and crystallinity dominate. Specify a SCGC™ P-series PPCOPO grade for impact-moulded parts — automotive interior, refrigerator and washing-machine bodies, battery cases, crates, and household appliances — where low-temperature ductility is required.

  3. Step 3

Match the Melt Flow Index (MFI) to the part geometry

Choose lower MFI (P640J at 10 g/10 min) for thicker walls under controlled pressure; mid MFI (P740J at 27, P840J at 43) for general injection and complex geometries; the highest MFI (P945J at 65, Y40 at 40) for thin-wall and large-cavity tools requiring fast cycle times.

  4. Step 4

    Confirm regulatory and food-contact compliance

P640J, P740J, and P840J carry the manufacturer's documented compliance with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520, EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, RoHS 2, REACH, and UL Yellow Card E202743. P945J and Y40 do not display equivalent compliance on the manufacturer's public product card — request a written compliance statement from Syntex America before specifying either for any food-contact application.

ASTM D4101 / ISO 1873 Classification

Every PP grade in Syntex's catalog is classified under ASTM D4101 with test methods (D1238 MFI, D638 tensile, D790 flexural, D256 Izod, D648 HDT, D1525 Vicat) on the manufacturer datasheet — documentation that satisfies most North American and European specifiers.

Confirmed Food-Contact Compliance (P640J / P740J / P840J)

Three of the four SCGC™ PPCOPO grades carry the manufacturer's documented compliance with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520, EU Regulation 10/2011, RoHS 2, REACH, and Packaging Directive 94/62/EC. P945J and Y40 require a written compliance statement before food-contact use.

Lightest Commercial Thermoplastic

Polypropylene density of 0.900–0.910 g/cm³ is the lowest of any commodity plastic, yielding parts roughly 5–10% lighter than equivalent HDPE at the same volume — reducing freight cost and embedded carbon.

Recyclable Resin Code 5

All five grades carry Resin Identification Code 5 under ASTM D7611 and are mechanically recyclable into recycled PP (rPP) through industrial reclaim streams — supporting U.S. Plastics Pact and EU Plastics Strategy targets.

Industry Standards & Food-Contact Compliance

The SCGC P-series technical datasheets cite ASTM test methods throughout: D1238 (MFI), D1505 (density), D638 (tensile), D790 (flexural modulus), D256 (notched Izod), D648 (HDT), D1525 (Vicat), D2117 (melting point), D785 (Rockwell hardness), and UL-94 (flammability). The materials are classified under ASTM D4101 (Standard Classification System for Polypropylene Injection and Extrusion Materials) and ISO 1873-1 / ISO 1873-2 for designation and test specimens.

Food-contact compliance is documented per grade. P640J, P740J, and P840J are listed by the manufacturer as compliant with U.S. FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, and additionally meet RoHS 2 (Directive 2011/65/EU), REACH (EC 1907/2006), and Packaging Directive 94/62/EC; UL Yellow Card E202743 applies. P945J food-contact compliance is not displayed on the manufacturer's public product card — request a written compliance statement from Syntex America before specifying for food-contact use. Y40 is supplied as a Chinese-origin homopolymer; food-contact compliance is not part of the producer's published datasheet, so a written compliance statement should be requested before any food-contact application. All five grades carry Resin Identification Code 5 (ASTM D7611) and are mechanically recyclable into recycled PP (rPP) through industrial reclaim streams.

Frequently Asked Questions

PP homopolymer (PPHOMO) contains only propylene monomer, giving the highest stiffness, surface hardness, and crystallinity in the PP family but brittleness below 0 °C. PP impact copolymer (PPCOPO / HECO) adds a dispersed ethylene–propylene rubber phase to a homopolymer matrix, delivering low-temperature impact resistance down to roughly –20 °C at the cost of some flexural stiffness. Syntex America supplies both: the SCGC™ P-series for PPCOPO and Oriental Energy Y40 for PPHOMO.

Match the grade in three steps. First, eliminate Y40 if the part sees temperatures below 0 °C — specify a SCGC™ P-series impact copolymer instead. Second, match the part geometry to MFI: low (P640J, 10 g/10 min) for thicker walls, mid (P740J, P840J) for general injection, high (P945J at 65, Y40 at 40) for thin-wall and large-cavity tools. Third, confirm food-contact compliance per grade before specifying.

Melt Flow Index (MFI) — also called Melt Flow Rate (MFR) — is the mass of polymer in grams that flows through a standardised capillary in 10 minutes at 230 °C under a 2.16 kg load (ASTM D1238). Low MFI (e.g., 10 g/10 min, P640J) means higher molecular weight and is suited to thicker walls or extrusion. High MFI (e.g., 65 g/10 min, P945J) means lower molecular weight and faster fill of thin-walled, large-cavity tools.

Three of the four SCGC™ PPCOPO grades supplied by Syntex America — P640J, P740J, and P840J — carry the manufacturer's documented compliance with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, plus RoHS 2, REACH, and UL Yellow Card E202743. P945J and Y40 do not display equivalent compliance on the manufacturer's public product card; request a written compliance statement before specifying either for food-contact applications.

P640J (MFI 10) is specified for rigid impact parts — automotive components, electrical appliance bodies, furniture, and toys. P740J (MFI 27) suits medium-flow injection of refrigerator top tables, washing-machine cabinets, and automotive trim. P840J (MFI 43) is used for high-flow injection of automotive battery cases and complex appliance parts. P945J (MFI 65) is reserved for very-high-flow thin-wall and large-volume parts — household storage boxes and large household appliances.

Y40 is a PP homopolymer supplied by Oriental Energy / Donghua Energy at MFI 40 g/10 min for injection moulding of rigid thin-wall parts where stiffness and crystallinity dominate. Compared with the SCGC™ P-series impact copolymers, Y40 offers higher tensile yield and surface hardness but is brittle below 0 °C — it has no rubber phase and therefore no cold-impact reserve. Pick Y40 for stiff thin-wall injection at room temperature; pick the P-series for cold-service or high-impact parts.

Within the SCGC™ P-series, MFI rises from 10 (P640J) through 27 (P740J) and 43 (P840J) to 65 g/10 min (P945J). As flow rises, notched Izod at 23 °C drops from 98 J/m to 65 J/m and tensile yield drops slightly from 27.5 to 26.5 MPa, while flexural modulus rises from ~1,177 to ~1,373 MPa. High-flow grades favour thin-wall parts and fast cycles; medium-flow grades retain more impact toughness.

For service near or below 0 °C, specify a SCGC™ PPCOPO impact copolymer rather than the Y40 homopolymer. P640J (MFI 10) gives the highest cold-impact reserve in the family with notched Izod ~39 J/m at –20 °C and ~98 J/m at 23 °C; P740J retains comparable –20 °C ductility (~39 J/m) at higher flow. P945J trades cold-impact reserve for very high flow — confirm the low-temperature value with the current SCGC datasheet before specifying it for cold service.

Polypropylene carries Resin Identification Code 5 under ASTM D7611 (the recycling triangle marked “5” / “PP”). All five PP grades supplied by Syntex America are mechanically recyclable into recycled PP (rPP) through municipal curbside and industrial reclaim streams. Recovery rates have improved steadily as more recyclers add PP sorting capacity, and U.S. Plastics Pact and EU Plastics Strategy targets are driving rising rPP content in food-contact and consumer-packaging streams.
